Welcome to the first year of the infants! Hedgehog class have settled well into Year 1 and we are developing our literacy and numeracy skills through a creative, topic based curriculum.
Throughout the year we will cover the following topics:
Who Am I?
Flowers and Insects
Dark and Light
Hooray...Let's Go On Holiday!
Our first topic was Toys. We found about the history of toys, investigated the materials toys are made from and discussed our favourite toys. Our literacy and numeracy work centred around the film 'Toy Story'. We enjoyed describing characters using adjectives, using speech bubbles and creating our own Toy Story mini-books. In numeracy we had lots of fun solving money problems in our class toy shop!
In our second topic, we found out about ourselves as part of our 'Who am I?' topic. We looked at the work of some famous artists for inspiration when creating our own self portraits. We looked at photographs of ourselves when we were babies and discussed how much we have changed! We have also been thinking about the similarities and differences between us, we understand that we are all unique and this makes us feel special. We have been thinking of positive ways to manage our emotions and we all made individual worry dolls and instructions to go with these. We have had so much fun in our class doctors surgery, especially when weighing babies and using the stethoscopes!
Our next topic was 'Day and Night'. We went on a light source hunt around the school and investigated light and dark in our role play area. We read the story of Owl Babies and used actions to retell this story! We loved performing our sharing assembly to all of our parents and carers!
Our most recent topic was 'Flowers and Insects'. We turned part of our classroom into a garden centre! We have grown broad beans and cress, and learned about the different habitats some plants like to live in. We loved reading and acting out the story of Aaargh Spider!
We all thoroughly enjoyed this topic, especially our trip to the Wetlands Centre! Take a look at our photographs below!
