We want children to develop a positive self-image in harmony with their own belief system whilst respecting the rights of other people to hold beliefs different from their own.
• To prepare pupils to live in a multi-cultural and pluralist society.
• To offer pupils lively, stimulating R.E. lessons, which take a variety of formats and provide opportunities for whole-class, group and individual work.
The school, in consultation with the Borough Advisory Teacher for R.E, has developed a scheme of work which complies with L.E.A. guidelines, published as “Widening Horizons”. The “Core Areas” - Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Sikhism and secular world view - are drawn upon in each Key Stage. In accordance with legal requirements, more material is drawn from Christianity across each Key Stage than from any other Core Area. The “Areas of Exploration” are also developed in each Key Stage. These are: Worship and Celebration, Rites of Passage, Key Figures, Writings, Stories, Language and Symbolism, Places and Communities, Values and Social Action and Beliefs. Medium term plans indicate which Core Areas and Areas of Exploration are drawn upon for each unit.
In the Foundation Stage, R.E. is taught within the framework of the “Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage” document (05/00). R.E. contributes to the following Early Learning Goals:
Personal, social and emotional development:
• have a developing respect for their own cultures and beliefs and those of other people
• understand that people have different needs, views, cultures and beliefs which need to be treated with respect
• understand that they can expect others to treat their needs, views and cultures and beliefs with respect
Knowledge and understanding of the world
• begin to know about their own cultures and beliefs and those of other people
There is no specified time requirement for R.E. in the nursery, but the school believes there should be recognition from the earliest stage of a child’s life of the importance of beliefs and religious practices. Therefore, a two year R.E. programme for Nursery and Reception children has been developed by Foundation Stage Staff and the R.E. co-ordinator.
R.E. in Key Stages 1 and 2 is generally delivered as a discrete subject, although links may be made with other curricular areas where and when this is appropriate. The Agreed Syllabus requires that 36 hours per year are devoted to the subject in Reception and Key Stage 1 and 45 hours per year in Key Stage 2. This is equivalent to 1 hour a week for Key Stage 1 children and 1 hour 25 minutes a week for Key Stage 2 children.
