Welcome to the first year of the infants! Hedgehog Class have settled well into Year 1 and we are developing our literacy and numeracy skills through a creative, topic based curriculum.
Wow! What a busy time we have had in Hedgehog Class. We have seen the return of 'Take One Picture Week'. During this week we based all of our work around the famous painting 'Tiger in a Tropical Storm' by the artist Henri Rousseau. We read the 'Tiger That Came To Tea' and wrote lists and labels for the Tiger. We ordered and measured tigers, painted forest scenes and even created our own versions of Rousseau's work.
Our first topic of the year was 'Who Am I?'
We looked at the work of some famous artists for inspiration when creating our own self portraits. We looked at photographs of ourselves when we were babies and discussed how much we have changed! We have also been thinking about the similarities and differences between us, we understand that we are all unique and this makes us feel special. We have been thinking of positive ways to manage our emotions and we all made individual worry dolls and instructions to go with these. We have had so much fun in our class doctors surgery, especially when weighing babies and using the stethoscopes.
In October we celebrated Black History month. We loved our storytelling workshop and the African and Caribbean tasting sessions! We found out about the Caribbean country of Barbados. We made colourful masks, shakers and learnt traditional Barbadian songs. We had a huge carnival to end our celebrations which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
Our next topic was TOYS! We discussed, drew and labelled our favourite toys. We looked at some toys from the past and had an exciting visit from Kingston Museum. We read the stories of Dogger and Elmer and the Lost Teddy. We also used the film Toy Story to inspire our creative writing. We had lots of fun learning about money in our class toy shop.
During our 'Day and Night' topic we read a variety of stories about the dark such as Owl Babies and Can't You Sleep Little Bear? We found out about nocturnal animals and created our own fact sheets, riddles and information booklets. In maths we continued to develop our number skills with a focus on mental strategies of addition and subtraction. We also investigated light and found out how different materials alter the passing of light. We had great fun in the dark tent seeing how the absence of light effects our sight.
This term our topic is 'Flowers and Insects'. We have read the stories Jack and the Beanstalk and Aaaargh Spider! We have been on a mini beast hunt around the school, it was so much fun! We found many creatures in our school grounds. We spotted worms, beetles, woodlice, butterflies, ant, flies and spiders. We even found a nest of recently hatched caterpillars...they were already starting to munch on the leaves around them! We hope to see more flowers and insects when we visit the Wetlands Centre in Barnes next month.
